Friedrich

Friedrich von Meck (1769–1794) — a freethinker, one of the most convincing advocates of Enlightenment ideas among the Baltic nobility, and a proponent of new, liberal ideas. A representative of the Freemasons, a lawyer, and a philosopher, he was a correspondent and friend of the German philosopher Immanuel Kant and a close friend, mentor, and patron of Garlieb Merkel. Friedrich von Meck dared to express unpopular opinions within the nobility regarding agrarian processes, and it is possible that the liberal atmosphere at Liepupe Manor indirectly influenced the emergence of the historically significant Kauguri Uprising. One of the organizers of the uprising, Gothard Johanson, the son of Liepupe Manor’s cook, was a peer and friend of Friedrich von Meck, with Liepupe Manor playing a significant role in shaping his views.
