Sanders Pernefogels, the first recorded owner of Liepupe Manor, mentioned in the chronicle of 1325, was a representative of an ancient Livonian family who spent his youth in Marienburg. He built the Pernigele Manor after reclaiming the vast Vesicles region from the Turaida bailiff. Both the historical origin of the manor’s name and the surname are connected to Livonian place names: parna meaning “linden tree” and joug meaning “river.” The name Pernigele was derived from the owner’s surname, while the Latvian name Liepupe has only been used since 1921.
