Garlieb Merkel (1769–1850) — a teacher, writer, and publicist, was one of the most prominent advocates of Enlightenment ideas in Latvia. From 1788 to 1792, Garlieb Merkel worked as a tutor for the family of Liepupe parish pastor Johann Christian Kölmann and frequently visited and stayed overnight at Liepupe Manor, becoming a close friend of the manor’s owner, Friedrich von Meck.
